Who We Are

The Island County Corrections Association was formed in January of 2023 to help support the Corrections men and women that serve our county. The Corrections staff have always had a guild, but it laid stagnant with no direction other than being there to represent the staff with contract negotiations. New guild leadership was established in 2022 and quickly turned the guild around for the better. The new leadership reformed the guild into a union and joined the Teamsters Local 231 out of Bellingham, WA. This led to the quickest settlement in the jail’s history. From time of the first sit down to the time of signing was roughly 5 months.

The new leadership brought in fresh ideas of community outreach and staff functions. The end of 2022 the first ICCA Christmas party was held, ending in a great night with lots of fun and bonding had.

That all being said, the formation of the ICCA wasn’t just to create a way to host parties. The vision was to create an avenue in which the Corrections Deputies of the Island County Sheriff’s Office could get into the community and spread awareness of the important job that we do every single day. To us this isn’t merely a job, 9 to 5, weekend and holidays off. It’s a lifestyle and a commitment to something a lot larger than any of us knew coming in. The sacrifices we make with our families to honor the commitment we all made upon entry into this profession, that goes under looked, unthanked, and unappreciated by most. Corrections Deputies are not just “jailers” that lock up bad guys. We’re mental health workers, care givers, role models, life changers. We’re the ones doing time along with the incarcerated. The only reprieve is we hopefully get to go home after our shift.

The hope of the leadership here is that we can create bonds with the community to let them know that we do in fact exist and what we do here is just as important as any other aspect of law enforcement.
